Luxology is seriously out of control! I’m going to recommend that you go visit their website to check out all the colorful candy they have to offer in the Easter basket they are calling modo 401. I’m certainly not going to have enough room to even scratch the surface.
modo was first introduced as a powerful, yet humble modeler during the SIGGRAPH confab of 2004. As it matured it started to implement more and more features until it became closer to a full-featured 3D package. At first, I was doubtful. I thought they should focus on what they do best’modeling. But, boy, it looks like I was wrong.
Not only does modo 401 have a full set of new modeling tools, but the package offers hair, raytracing, motion blur, subsurface scattering, depth of field’really, whatever you want!
The big question is: Is it ready for production and competing against Maya, Max, Houdini and Softimage? The package is already being used for its modeling capabilities. But, I don’t think the manufacturers really need Hollywood money: Luxology is firmly embedded with the other industries and other partners such as SolidWorks and Bentley Systems. Furthermore, because of its relatively low price point, its become a favorite with freelancers who can put out plenty of good work without having to buy a $3,000-$7,000 3D package. Not to mention the huge development pool of individuals creating content for the iPhone who are using modo, rather than the Autodesk consortium of packages.
