Animation Production Day Selects 48 Projects for 2018

The selection jury for Animation Production Day has whittled down 71 submitted projects to 48 worthy participants for the 12th edition, taking place April 26 & 27. The producers of these projects will be invited to discuss co-production and financing possibilities with potential partners in a series of pre-planned, one-on-one meetings in Stuttgart’s L-Bank. The total production value of the selected projects is about 170 million euros ($200+ million USD).

Animation Production Day is the German animation industry’s biggest business platform, and takes place as part of the Stuttgart International Festival of Animated Film and the FMX Conference on Animation, Effects, Games and Immersive Media. About one third of projects presented at APD in previous years have been produced. Registration is still open for interested investors (deadline: March 6, 2018), as are submissions for the Trickstar Business Award, a 7,500 euro prize (deadline: March 15, 2018).

Germany accounts for 17 of the projects, with another 28 from other European countries, and three from outside Europe. France, Belgium, Spain and Hungary are also strongly represented; Denmark, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Iceland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, the Czech Republic, Serbia, Turkey, Ukraine, Russia, Israel and Brazil also have projects in the mix. The pitches span series, movies and games targeting a variety of audiences and covering a range of themes. Cross-media formats are also strong represented this year, with 11 projects.

Some of the innovative concepts come from participants in the APD Talent Programme. Creative Europe MEDIA funding allows APD to offer 16 up-and-coming producers free participation in the event, and these fresh talents get a chance to connect with decision-makers and develop their career prospects. One of these projects is Dimitri & Kim from Serbia, which qualified for the Talent Programme as part of APD’s cooperation with the Animation Sans Frontieres training program.
