Paramount Animation took the CinemaCon 2018 stage in Las Vegas on Wednesday, revealing two new additions to its feature slate: Monster on the Hill, which is being produced in partnership with ReelFX (which has been developing the project) and Walden Media; and Luck, produced with Skydance Animation (which announced the title in 2017).
The studio also announced that the next SpongeBob SquarePants movie will be titled It’s a Wonderful Sponge. Set for release in Summer 2020, this third bigscreen trip to Bikini Bottom will be directed by series writer Tim Hill — taking over the franchise reins from Paul Tibbitt. Hill is also writing the script.
The presentation featured clips from the magic-tinged CG family flick Wonder Park, coming March 15, 2019 and directed by Pixar veteran Dylan Brown. Rachel Platten performed the original song “Wonder” live.
Monster on the Hill (2020) is adapted from the 2013 novel by Rob Harrell, and takes place in a world “where monsters are tame and monster wrestling is a popular sport, teenage Winnie seeks to follow in her father’s footsteps as a manager by turning an inexperienced monster into a contender.” Bradley Raymond (Tinker Bell, The Lion King 1 ½) is directing from a screenplay by Matt Lieberman and Etan Cohen.
Luck (slated by Skydance for March 2021) is a comedy that “pulls back the curtain on the millennia-old battle between the organizations of good luck and bad luck that secretly affects our daily lives.” Directed by Alessandro Carloni (co-director, Kung Fu Panda 3) and written by Jonathan Aibel & Glenn Berger (Trolls, KFP films),
