The Belchers Go to Hollywood

A decade after 20th Century Fox gave us a filmic version of The Simpsons, they’ve released news of a brand new cinematic adaptation of another beloved property from their animated lineup. Bob’s Burgers will be heading to theaters in a feature-length adaptation scheduled for release July 17, 2020.

Said series creator Loren Bouchard about the ambitious project:

“We know the movie has to scratch every itch the fans of the show have ever had, but it also has to work for all the good people who’ve never seen the show. We also know it has to fill every inch of the screen with the colors and the sounds and the ever-so-slightly greasy texture of the world of Bob’s — but most of all it has to take our characters on an epic adventure. In other words, it has to be the best movie ever made. But no pressure, right?!”

Launched on Fox in 2011, Bob’s Burgers has grown into one of the network’s most acclaimed and iconic TV shows. The latest creation of Bouchard, who previously wrote much of Dr. Katz, Professional Therapist and Home Movies, as well as creating Lucy: The Daughter of the Devil for Adult Swim, Bob’s Burgers is a very charming fusion of animated family sitcom and workplace comedy. It depicts the stressful life of burger cook Bob Belcher (H. Jon Benjamin), a talented man in the kitchen who continuously finds his financial ventures foiled by his flawed business sense and his bizarre but endearingly relatable family. Initially planned as an Adult Swim-style comedy about a family of cannibals (as hinted at in the first episode), it instead became a family comedy in the style of The Simpsons and King of the Hill. That direction netted the show seven consecutive Emmy nominations, including two wins in 2014 and 2017.

In some ways, a movie seems like a curious direction for Bob’s Burgers to go in. Much of the show’s brilliance stems from its highly improvised ensemble voice recording sessions that allow the show’s ace team of comedic actors to set the characters’ distinct personalities against each other. Will a feature-length story allow its character chemistry to shine in the same way? We’ll find out when it hits theaters.

The eighth season of Bob’s Burgers premiered October 1. It’s produced by Bento Box Entertainment.
